Three operators of multiple debt-collection agencies were sued by New York Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo in an attempt to shut down the companies over illegal tactics. Some of the practices detailed at a press conference announcing the suit included insulting victims, threatening victims with immediate arrest while pretending to be law officers and calling everyone in the phone book with the same name in an attempt to receive payment. In some cases, victims paid the agencies even when they did not owe anything just to stop the harassment.  Diana Louise Carter, Rochester Democrat & Chronicle  08/19/2009 Read Article: Rochester Democrat & Chronicle

In today’s economy more and more consumers find themselves in debt.  In this climate, debt collectors are often getting more and more aggressive in their approach.  There are laws to protect consumers from these tactics.  We have seen collectors use racial slurs, call neighbors and employers, use profanity, and call dozens of times in a single day.  If you have been a victim of this type of conduct you should call my partner Mark Frenkel to see if you have a case.
